Kurow has much to see and do:
The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail is the longest continuous ride in New Zealand and takes in some of the country's most incredible scenery. From New Zealand's highest mountain, Aoraki Mt Cook, the trail descends over 2000ft and travels 300km to the coastal town of Oamaru. This trail showcases New Zealand's geological, geographical and historical highlights from the Southern Alps to the Pacific Ocean.
Kurow Estate is the home of Kurow Winery, Pasquale wines and liqueurs and Kurow Village wines. It is nestled in the Waitaki Valley, surrounded by the beautiful Southern Alps. You will find their cellar door, winery and vineyard based just outside the township of Kurow. You can learn about the features of their Waitaki-grown wines from their friendly staff by doing a wine tasting or just relax and enjoy a glass of fine wine accompanied by a cheese platter or pizza while taking in spectacular north Otago views.
The Awakino Ski Field is a friendly and affordable club-operated ski field situated high in the St Marys Range near Kurow in the Waitaki Valley. The field is situated in a sunny, north-facing valley with fantastic views over the Waitaki Valley and Hakataramea. It boasts one and a half high-speed rope tows, queues are unheard of and a busy day means more than 10 persons.
The first people to settle in the Waitaki Valley were the Waitaha who used a reed 'boat' called a mokihi to navigate the wild Waitaki River. Call in to Kurow Museum to see the replica mokihi made by the late Rangi Te Maiharoa – a descendant of the Waitaha. Kurow Museum is the National Museum of Social Security. Visit to learn the story of the 'Three Wise Men' who witnessed the hardship and saw the necessity for a scheme to help families in need.
North Otago and the larger surrounding Waitaki District have been renowned for striking and informative features for more than 150 years. The Vanished World Centre at Duntroon is the heart of the Vanished World Trail, with displays that help explain and interpret the fossils, rocks, localities and landforms along the trail. Visitors wishing to participate in the fossil heritage of the Waitaki are able to gain a greater appreciation of the unique nature of the area by viewing these displays.
River-T Estates' philosophy is to remain a small, boutique vineyard and focus totally on quality from the paddock to the glass. They hand-harvest their grapes from the end of April until mid-May, making them one of the last vineyards to harvest in New Zealand. Their cellar door is open from September until June.
